MusicCraft: Creating Digital Games to Engage Young Musicians
-
As device time for teens and tweens has increased, it has become more challenging for educators to engage them in learning without the flash and excitement of commercial video games and pro-YouTubers. In this session, attendees will learn to turn their music curriculum into gamified interactive lessons with a variety of technologies including Google Slides, Twine, and Scratch. By leveling up their lessons in a way that excites learners, educators can spend less time managing their classroom and more time making music.

Ostinato Overture: Rocking Out with Chrome Music Lab!
-
In this session, attendees will learn how to utilize Chrome Music Lab and Google Slides to scaffold the teaching and utilization of ostinatos in the elementary music room. We will begin with an interactive composition project for students and then demonstrate how to aid students in transferring their compositions into Chrome Music Lab. Emphasis will be placed on utilizing student compositions for performance, as well as how to use Chrome Music Lab to differentiate both struggling and high-achieving learners. Finally, we will conclude the process by creating a class composition for performance.

The Power of Unhappy Endings:
-
In the Power of Unhappy Endings, Mary-Ellen Fimbel presents her revolutionary game that bridges the power of a compelling narrative and traditional elementary music concepts to bring to life the meaningful story of a small creature who becomes the sole survivor of an apocalyptic event. Bonnie’s tragic tale, and companion game, showcase resilience and hope in a way that is approachable for a young audience while providing teachers with an opportunity to encourage active empathy and engagement in musical concepts. In addition to sharing the inspiration behind the story, Mary-Ellen will share the experience of playtesting with children and how the story and reception of the game’s prototype have transformed into the first game of her Music Room Friends learning suite.
